I have has my fill of boat museums so I went back to the boat and started getting things ready to head back to Cape Vincent. Left Kingston around 3:00 and made our way around Wolff Island (pic 4). They must have two hundred windmills on this island. By 4:20 we were at the public dock in Cape
. Old town with lots of history. Rode our bikes over to Fort Henry (about 8 miles and one monster hill from marina). They did reenactments dressed in period clothes. Really an awesome place to see. Even got to meet their mascot, David the 13th . A goat! Had a great meal before we went back to the boat for the evening
, they use step locks. Construction began in 1827 and was complete in 1832. All the locks are the original locks with only upkeep maintenance down on them. All stones were hand cut and laid.
First pic shows lock gate #29. As you can see, it is made of wood. Even thought this is one of the newer gates, they made it of wood to look like original ones. Scan down to pic 4. This is the old lock wall we stayed on last night. Most of them have park like settings. Pic three is what is behind our boat. The old step lock. Pic two shows the steps. A step lock is one that you enter and rise(or lower) like any other lock except when the gate opens, you enter the next lock right away. They closed the old lock because they needed a larger one for the bigger boats. Left Smith Falls and stayed on the lock wall at #19 for the night.
Very warm day. We walked around the town and decided to eat at Norm's Pizza. Do not eat there! Spaghetti with brown sauce and lasagna noodles with the same brown sauce (no meat). When we asked what was in the sauce the waitress said that Norm makes it when no one is around. Should have been a clue not to eat it. Staying on the lock wall tonight. First pic is of the furry things that grow in the water around here. When the water is released from the lock, they get thin. When no current, they blow up like this. You need to watch you don't suck them up in anything. Pic two is a turtle that locked through with us at one of the locks and pic three, if you look really close, you can see Annie Lee 111 in the back ground. This was taken from a tower in town. 
Neat arrangement. No town here. Just the restaurant/bar, laundry, ice cream shop and small store. All in one building. Electric $10.00 for the night
Parliament buildings. Second pic is from the top of the Peace Tower. Last one of a view of the locks we did yesterday from the bridge. There is so much history here. Theirs and ours. We will be heading out tomorrow. Would love to come back here in the winter. Once the canal freezes over, they ice skate on it and there are little booths on the sides with hot chocolate. The pictures we saw of it look so neat.
Pic three is where we stayed the night at the bottom of the locks and by the lock gates. Here they are letting the water out for us to start our trip up the locks. At 9:30 we started our trip up with a house boat. Two hours later, we were finally through lock #8 and tied off to the walls (wooden docks at the wall) downtown on the canal. It was raining and cool. We walked around town, went through the Parliament buildings and went back to the boat, turned on the
Rained all night. Untied around 7:30 and headed for Montebello State Park. Home to the largest log cabin structure. Even though we did not have a reservations, they let us dock the boat at the marina since we were ahead of the schedule. Got tied off and got the umbrellas out. Walked up to the log cabin hotel for their Sunday brunch. What a spread. Shrimp salad, crab legs, all kinds of fish, shrimp, eggs benedick, omelets, oysters, pies, cakes, breads, all kinds of fruits and veggies, any type of salad you can think of...all this and more. Only $44.00 per person. Thanks goodness the water was free. Don't think we have had a $100.00 meal on this trip. We took a walk around the grounds. Ottawa is about 5 1/2 hours away so we decided to go for it. We will stay on the lock wall at the bottom of the 8 step locks.
last night in Saint Anne. We walked into town and found the farmers market. Got some great pastries and a few supplies at the grocery. We purchased our permits for the Canadian Parks and the permit for the water ways. This allows us to stay on the lock walls and lock through free anywhere in Canada for all of 2011. So, with $740.00 in permits, we are on our way. Second picture is of lock #2. It has a floating dock inside. A lock/parks employee ties our boat off to that dock and floats up with us to the top. It was a 55" lift. You can see that the doors are tall and narrow. Tied off on the lock wall. Had it all to ourselves. Looks like rain tonight. All the locks are owned by the parks department.
This morning, we rode the bus to the Underground to look around. This is an underground mall in the heart of the downtown area. When we got back to the boat, we headed out (11:39) under better weather than when we came. We had to back track and head back up the St. Lawrence to the Ottawa River. We needed a pump out but felt the marina was over charging. Found a yacht club and they charged us $25.00. Same as the marina. Expensive s*%#! Needed to travel through two locks (still had to pay even though this was a return trip). We were told that we could stay on the lock wall at Sainte Anne Quebec. Everyone in the country was staying on the wall. Finally saw a boat 
leaving and we slid in the spot. Party central for all the older folks. Weather is cool but this doesn't stop them. True boaters. We are in the downtown area in front of lock #1 on the Ottawa River. Pic one is the last lock on the St. Lawrence before you go to Montreal. Second pic is inside that lock and the third picture is what is left of the Worlds Fair in Montreal.
